One of our Union-negotiated benefits for MEF is the Group Legal Services Plan. It is a benefit provided by the City of San Jose and overseen by MEF members.
MEF Legal Trust services offers current full-time MEF members $1,250 a year to use on legal services. These include wills and trust, family law matters, adoptions, guardianship, debtor/ creditor and other consumer problems, tenant problems, and other civil matters. It also includes other legal services such as document preparation, negotiating, mediating, and appearing in court. There are some legal problems not covered by the plan , such as criminal defense, immigration, and employment problems. The amount of attorney time for these legal services is limited. MEF has successfully negotiated with the city management to provide members up to $1,000 in educational reimbursement for tuition and other related expenses for college accredited courses or related career development opportunities. Members can contact their department HR liaisons for compensation or request assistance from a MEF Steward for more information.
