We at MEF-AFSCME Local 101 are deeply committed to supporting the family of our beloved member, Community Service Officer Long Pham, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in early August. His service to our community will never be forgotten, and as a union, we are dedicated to doing all we can to assist his family during this difficult time.
In light of recent developments, we feel it necessary to address concerns about a GoFundMe account set up by San José Police Sergeant Tam Truong to collect donations for Officer Pham's family. While we respect the intention behind raising funds for this important cause, we have serious concerns about Sergeant Truong’s role in administering the nearly $23,000 that has been donated thus far.
Sergeant Truong is currently facing criminal fraud allegations and is a defendant in a pending lawsuit. He has also faced wage theft claims related to a private security company he once managed. These unresolved legal matters cast doubt on his suitability to manage such a significant sum of money meant for the Pham family. Our primary goal is to ensure that these donations reach the family without delay and without the cloud of legal controversy.
For this reason, we are calling on Sergeant Truong to take one of two actions: either transfer the funds to the Pham family immediately, or hand over control of the GoFundMe account to a neutral party, such as the San José Police Foundation, which has already established an official fund to support the family. This step is crucial to ensure transparency and avoid any risk of mismanagement.
As public servants and union members, we must maintain the highest standards of integrity in all matters. The Pham family deserves nothing less than our full support and dedication during this time. We hope Sergeant Truong will act swiftly and in the best interest of the family by stepping away from this role.
In solidarity,
MEF-AFSCME Local 101 Executive Board
