What Does a Steward Do?
As a steward, you will:
Represent workers in your department and throughout the city.
Attend and participate in the monthly steward meeting (on release time – the City pays you to attend).
Advocate for fair treatment, stronger workplace rights, and better working conditions.
What’s the Commitment?
Monthly Steward Meetings: These are held once a month, on a Thursday afternoon, and you’ll attend on city-paid release time.
Ongoing Training: We provide ongoing training to make sure you’re fully equipped for the role.
Annual Full-Day Steward Training: Twice a year, we host a full-day training (also on release time) to build your skills and connect you with fellow stewards.
Why Get Involved?
Now is the time to stand up and get involved. As a steward, you’ll:
Ensure your department is represented in discussions that affect your work and your coworkers.
Be the voice for your colleagues on important workplace issues.
Make an impact not just in your department but citywide, helping to strengthen our union and the work we do.
AFSCME stewards are leaders, advocates, and problem-solvers. Your voice matters, and this is your chance to step up and ensure your coworkers are supported and your department is heard.
